I think this is a challenge I’ve seen on both Tumblr and WordPress, but I’m not sure who the original author is so I can’t give credit where it’s due – so apologies for that! But having seen this kicking around I thought I would give it a try. I’ll post all 30 questions at the end of this blog for anyone that’s also interested in taking part.

So, what was my first project?

Let’s not include the weird, misshapen object from when I was taught to knit as a kid, filled with holes, and naturally went narrow to wide to narrow again… I’m sure we’ve all been there. I used to knit at Nan’s house.

I didn’t start to knit until about 4 years ago. It’s one of those things that I think has been longer, but Facebook tells me otherwise through it’s “on this day” feature. It came about as Alex bought me a Ravenclaw scarf for Christmas – and it was a very Harry Potter Christmas indeed – and it was awesome. Alex is a Hufflepuff, so once Christmas was out of the way I wanted to return the favour and get him his house scarf. Except there weren’t any.

And a thought developed. A rather life changing thought. I would make one.

So on a random day I went into Hobbycraft and bought something like four balls of yellow and two balls of black yarn, and some needles – having no idea about yarn size and needle size – and went home to start. Of course, mum had to start me off. I remember her casting on 50 stitches for me, and knitting the first couple of rows. Then it was all down to me.

I ended up with a huge scarf as I was determined to use it all. Not quite Doctor Who long, but it was certainly long enough! It was made entirely in garter stitch, and I managed to put some tassels on the ends as well [using a latch hook from rug making]. I got some crests from Amazon and it was done. But it also sparked the bigger need to keep knitting in me – and I’ve pretty much not stopped since.

Apparently I don’t have any photo’s to share directly with you. That’s okay though, when I think about it… I sort of cringe at how I made it then compared to the skill set that I have now. [Although, I do feel much of the time all my knitting looks like a beginner made it…].
Sadly, that scarf no longer exists – at least, not here. Alex used to keep a lot of things in his car, which sort of makes sense… until the car gets stolen. So I made him another one, and a much better constructed one at that.

Learning to knit has definitely kept me sane through the years, and I hope to be doing it for many more years to come!
